Regarding
the fauna which lives in these forests, there is the beautiful Hispanic
goat, a protected species which is practically in extinction, and the golden
eagle. Other inhabitants are the civet, the ichneumon, the polecat and
many other small mammals, birds and insects of various species. There are
also a variety of plants used for medicinal purposes, such as sage, rosemary,
thyme, fennel or camomile. In the scrub of the undergrowth there is an
abundance of gorse, broom, rock rose, furze or everlasting. There is also
the rare Spanish fir tree. In the Almadén river and spots such as
the "El Charco de Las Viñas" it is not hard to find turtles,
frogs or snakes. Flowers such as the scented orchid or the bee orchid are
abundant in the area of the Ojén sierra, where the night guard is
the golden owl, a bird which is in extinction and hard to find.
