The testimony of history, endorsed by Roman, Visigothic and Arabic remains scattered over its territory, is summed up in the charming old quarter of the city. A labyrinth of narrow streets and tiny squares surrround the "Orange Square" and the majestic main church "Iglesia de la Encarnación" where bougainvillaes and geraniums add their colorful counterpoint to blazing white lime washed facades and the noble ochre of the worn stones of the once powerful Moslem castle. A veritable swarm of small commercial establishments, restaurants and taverns offer the wayfarer an astounding range of wares and a varied choice of culinary specialities. Scrolling through this delighful maze can easily become a habit, particularly when the orange trees blossom in spring or when the marvel-of-Peru fills the summer air with its delicate aromas.
