Plaza de la Iglesia


Another plaza which is very popular with visitors and residents alike is the Plaza de la Iglesia, as it provides an interesting legacy of art, history and architectural tradition to Marbella. Here stands stands the most important and majestic building in the city: The Iglesia Mayor de Santa María de la Encarnación, the construction of which commenced in 1618.

On the main façade a beautiful baroque style sculptured redstone doorway stands out. The interior of the church has three naves which had to be rebuilt after the Civil War of 1936. The central nave has a semicircular extreme with corinthian pillars built into the wall and covered by a spherical crypt. This forms the main frame for the baroque style image of the city´s Patron Saint San Bernabé which stand at its centre.

The Organ of Sol Mayor is in the choirstand, it is the most important built in Spain in the last 125 years. Its installation commenced in 1972 and was concluded in 1975. It consists of 5.000 tin, copper and wooden tubes, four 56 note manual keyboards and one pedal with another 32, with one 16 foot open tube on the front and other special features.
