This rural district in the Province of Malaga is composed of 31 villages each with very deep historic roots.
SITUATION : North-east of the city of Malaga bordering with the province of Granada.
AREA : 1.001 square kilometres.
GEOGRAPHY : Its countryside has a strong personality, the (highlands) Sierra of Tejeda, Almijara, Camaralas and Enmedio to the north become gently rolling hills which tumble down to the coast. The Axarquía has 30 kilometres of coast. Near the border with the Province of Granada there are cliffs and small bays, the rest are open sandy beaches.
POPULATION : There are over 100,000 inhabitants.
HOW TO GET THERE : From the N-340 main road, Malaga-Almería. From Zafarraya through the Alazores mountain pass. From Antequera, Las Pedrizas, C-340. Malaga airport is only half an hour from the first village in the Axarquía and there is a good bus service with Malaga and the other provinces in Andalucía.
