Axarquia Region

The land of the Axarquía is like a small Málaga : mountains, valleys, and coast. In the mountains it is a labyrinth of olives, almonds, vines, and above all, towns. Towns and farmhouses which speckle the landscape with life. A life that grows among sunken cultivations in narrow valleys. In the valley of the Axarquía there are meadows of fruit groves and vegetables which go deeper into the river Vélez, with lemon and orange trees by Benamargosa and Guaro and up to small valleys which reach the foot of the sierra. On the coast, the sierra looks out over the Mudejar and Mediterranean towns, sometimes leaning on the side, others crouching in peaceful valleys with the mountains behind and the Mediterranean in the background in shreds of horizon. It is also a coast of springs which satiate its people, and waters the plots. On the coast, the Axarquía is a landscape of cliffs and coves, of watchtowers, beaches, and vegetable gardens, of tradition and tourism.
