VEGETATION

Net of protected natural spaces

In spite of the reduced extent of the Reserve and Protected Peripheral Area, there is an outline of numerous bio-types characterized by its vegetation, among the most important there is the subaquatic vegetation, the marshy vegetation, the bushes, and meso-Mediterranean holm-oak. In the first group, there is the existence of fresh water phanerogamea (plants with flowers) such as Zannichellia palustris and Patamogeton spp., which basically develop in the Laguna Chica; regarding the marshy vegetation, there is a presence on the banks of both lagoons and delimiting the area of the Reserve, of rushes, giant reeds canes and bulrushes.

The outstanding vegetative formation in the peripheral area of protection is the holm-oak Quercus rotundifolia, belonging to the meso-Mediterranean Series Baetica Basophile of the holm-oak, associated to a rich bushes of kermes oak, hawthorns, asparagus, thyme, rockroses, etc…

In the herbaceous stratum one can find peonies with large and beautiful pink flowers. In the Protected Peripheral Area there are also other types of vegetation which are the result of the traditional use of agricultural resources: herbaceous crops, almonds and olives; also, the cattle use and the decrease of the pre-existent holm-oak condition the existence of brooms.
