GEO-MORPHOLOGY

Net of protected natural spaces

The Archidona lagoons are situated over materials which belong to the Trias Keuper of the Middle Sub-Baetica area, being mainly formed by loamy-limestone, clay and rising evaporations, basically plasters. It is precisely the abundance of these last elements which has favoured the exploitation of the quarries near the lagoons. Given that there are no fluvial contributions to the lagoons, the clayey materials of the subsoil play an important hydrogeological role on retaining the overflow water. Really, this humid area depends exclusively from the pluviometer’s contributions, which gives it the characteristic of "Inflowing bowl" with similar origins to other nearby lagoons such as Fuente de Piedra, Campillos or the Ratosa.

The Archidona lagoons are lodged in the terrain’s depressions surrounded by small hills which are known in the area as "hoyos" (hollows), as they are not visible from the access ways. These depressions form part of the area and surrounding landscape, and give the place a characteristic aspect.
