Chapel of the Virgende Gracia

|
The old mosque of the Arabic city
served as a base so that, after the conquest, a Christian church could be erected in
honour of the patron of Archidona, the Virgen de Gracia. It has the particularity of being
the only mosque conserved in the province of Malaga. Two different parts can be
distinguished in its construction: the first three naves, parallel to each other and
pointed to the east, form the remains of the mosque; and three naves which are
perpendicular to the others, which were annexed in the 17th century to extend the building
for the reconversion into the Christian worship, which changed the churchs
orientation towards the north. The sanctuary
was remodelled in the 18th century, according to the architectural style combining the red
brick and the whitewashed masonry, which produced such beautiful results in the Plaza
Ochavada. The building has been through some important restoration works, ended in the
first phase. |
