Castle and walls

|
Over the remains of the Roman walls,
the Arabs erected a fort with three defensive barriers, of which only two are still
standing although they are very deteriorated. This defensive complex rises over only one
side of the sierra, as the other side is cut by a cleft which therefore is the best
guarantee of its impregnability. Built in the 9th century, the castle was rebuilt in the
13th century by Alhamar, first Nazari king. The
outstanding feature of the complex is the Puerta del Sol, an access which imposes for the
solidity of its physiognomy, facing the east. On the top of the hills, a walled belt was
built with dwellings inside belonging to the governor of the citadel and dungeon, the
construction of which has given name to the precinct. |
