THE
GOLDEN AGE
After passing through the hands of the
Romans, Godes and Arabs (civilizations which left their mark), Antequera sees its most
flourishing period from the Christian conquest in 1410. The renaissance and baroque
periods form its "golden age". The city is converted into a great and important
economic centre and is the scene of commercial development. For this, the characteristic
of "cross-roads" is fundamental, and is still kept today with all its vitality.
The presence of important members of nobility is not strange to this prosperity, as well
as important religious orders, who use part of their resources in constructing buildings
to beautify the city. Its tangible testimonies are the churches, convents and ancestral
homes which are conserved. |
